We present the first reported case of prosthetic joint infection caused by Clostridium bifermentans, which was treated with total joint washout and debridement allowing for the patient to retain his prosthesis and achieve full recovery. Clostridium bifermentans is a gram-positive, anaerobic, spore-forming bacterium. This organism was once considered to be non-pathogenic, but has recently been associated with cases of septic arthritis, empyema, osteomyelitis, soft tissue infection, brain abscess, bacteremia and endocarditis.Recent years have witnessed evolution of lung allocation strategies to prioritize sicker recipients. In the pre-transplant period, this has translated into increased utilization of invasive extracorporeal or mechanical ventilatory support as a bridge to lung transplantation. The morbidity associated with these strategies warrants consideration to less invasive respiratory support modalities. Herein, we present a case highlighting successful bridge to lung transplantation with a relatively non-invasive negative pressure ventilator.
The efficacy and safety of the combined use of veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and prone ventilation are currently not known for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
We report two cases in which the combination of veno-venous ECMO and prone ventilation for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pneumonia were successfully carried out. Both patients had developed severe respiratory failure due to SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia, thus requiring veno-venous ECMO. Prone ventilation was also administered safely.
Oxygenation and lung compliance gradually improved during prone ventilation, and both patients were successfully extubated. For patients with severe SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia who require veno-venous ECMO, the use of prone ventilation could be beneficial, and should be considered.

Sugar transporters are the proteins that mediate sugar allocation among or within source/sink organs. The transporters of the major facilitator superfamily (MFS) targeting carbohydrates represent the largest family of sugar transporters in many plants. Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duchesne) is an important crop appreciated worldwide for its unique fruit flavor. The involvement of MFS sugar transporters (STs) in cultivated strawberry fruit sugar accumulation is largely unknown. In this work, we characterized the genetic variation associated with fruit soluble sugars in a collection including 154 varieties. check details Then, a total of 67 ST genes were identified in the v4.0 genome integrated with the v4.0.a2 protein database of F. vesca, the dominant subgenome provider for modern cultivated strawberry. Phylogenetic analysis updated the nomenclature of strawberry ST homoeologs. Both the chromosomal distribution and structural characteristics of the ST family were improved. Semi-RT-PCR analysis in nine tissues from cv. Benihoppe screened 34 highly expressed ST genes in fruits. In three varieties with dramatically differing fruit sugar levels, qPCR integrated with correlation analysis between ST transcript abundance and sugar content identified 13 sugar-correlated genes. The correlations were re-evaluated across 19 varieties, including major commercial cultivars grown in China. Finally, a model of the contribution of the sugar transporter system to subcellular sugar allocation in strawberry fruits was proposed. Our work highlights the involvement of STs in controlling strawberry fruit soluble sugars and provides candidates for the future functional study of STs in strawberry development and responses and a new approach for strawberry genetic engineering and molecular breeding.
Universal access to high quality essential medicines is critical to sustainable development (SDG 3.8). However low- and middle-income countries struggle to ensure access to all medicines on their national essential medicines lists (EML). Market registration is the first step in determining both access and availability yet the extent to which essential medicines are registered for useat countrylevel is not known. Companies apply for a marketing authorisation, however low price or lack of a market is a disincentive. Local production has been promoted to ensure availability of essential medicines butresearch in this area is also limited.
The study took place between 2011 and 2015. We systematically examined the registration status of medicines and vaccines listed in the Ugandan 2012 EML and conducted 20 interviews with regulators, ministry of health representatives, donors, and pharmaceutical producers and analysed quality assurance issues affecting registration, procurement, and local production of medicineal medicines.
Monitoring and audit of the registration of essential and non-essential medicines should be a priority nationally and, regionally through harmonisation of registration requirements in the East African Community. Cells are Gram-positive and strictly halophilic bacilli. Strain Marseille-Q1234T exhibits 98.46% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Halobacillus naozhouensis strain JSM 071068T (NR_116505.1), the phylogenetically closely related species with standing in nomenclature. Based on the phenotypic and phylogenetic evidence, OrthoANI values and results of the biochemical tests, the new species is named Halobacillus ihumii sp. nov., for which strain Marseille-Q1234T (= CSURQ1234) is proposed as the type strain.
