Cells use extracellular vesicles (EVs) as an inter-cellular communicators to deliver several factors (e.g., microRNAs) that may regulate the responses of other cells. However, there is limited knowledge about the identification and characterization of EV-miRNAs in salmonids or the effect of infections on these. In this study, Illumina sequencing technology was used to identify Coho salmon plasma EV-miRNAs upon Piscirickettsia salmonis infection at four different time points. A total of 118 novels and 188 known EV-miRNAs, including key immune teleost miRNAs families (e.g., miR-146, miR-122), were identified. A total of 245 EV-miRNAs were detected as differentially expressed (FDR  less then  5%) in terms of control, with a clear down-regulation pattern throughout the disease. KEGG enrichment results of EV-miRNAs target genes showed that they were grouped mainly in cellular, stress, inflammation and immune responses. Therefore, it is hypothesized that P. salmonis could potentially benefit from unbalanced modulation response of Coho salmon EV-miRNAs in order to promote a hyper-inflammatory and compromised immune response through the suppression of different key immune host miRNAs during the course of the infection, as indicated by the results of this study.Atherosclerotic plaques develop over a long time and can cause heart attacks and strokes. There are no simple mathematical models that capture the different timescales of rapid macrophage and lipid dynamics and slow plaque growth. We propose a simple ODE model for lipid dynamics that includes macrophage preference for ingesting apoptotic material and modified low-density lipoproteins (modLDL) over ingesting necrotic material. We use multiple timescale analysis to show that if the necrosis rate is small then the necrotic core in the model plaque may continue to develop slowly even when the lipid levels in plaque macrophages, apoptotic material and modLDL appear to have reached equilibrium. We use the model to explore the effect of macrophage emigration, apoptotic cell necrosis, total rate of macrophage phagocytosis and modLDL influx into the plaque on plaque lipid accumulation.X-ray computed tomography (CT) has been widely used in clinical practice, and contrast agents such as Iohexol are often used to enhance the contrast of CT imaging between normal and diseased tissue. However, such contrast agents can have some toxicity. Thus, new CT contrast agents are urgently needed. Owing to the high atomic number (Z = 83), low cost, good biological safety, and great X-ray attenuation property (5.74 cm2 kg-1 at 100 keV), bismuth has gained great interest from researchers in the field of nano-sized CT contrast agents. Here, we synthesized BiF3 Ln@PVP nanoparticles (NPs) with an average particle size of about 380 nm. After coating them with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), the BiF3 Ln@PVP NPs possessed good stability and great biocompatibility. Meanwhile, compared with the clinical contrast agent Iohexol, BiF3 Ln@PVP NPs showed superior in vitro CT imaging contrast. Subsequently, after in situ injection with BiF3 Ln@PVP NPs, the CT value of the tumor site after the injection was significantly higher than that before the injection (the CT value of the pre-injection and post-injection was 48.9 HU and 194.58 HU, respectively). The morphology of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract can be clearly observed over time after oral administration of BiF3 Ln@PVP NPs. Finally, the BiF3 Ln@PVP NPs were completely discharged from the GI tract of mice within 48 h of oral administration with no obvious damage to the GI tract. In summary, our easily synthesized BiF3 Ln@PVP NPs can be used as a potential clinical contrast agent and may have broad application prospects in CT imaging.

    The field of cardio-oncology aims to optimize the cardiac health of cancer patients. The goals of this study are to (1) describe the demographics of a cardio-oncology clinic and (2) apply the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) cardiac risk stratification guidelines among breast cancer patients to assess the development of cardiovascular events, primarily heart failure (HF).

    We performed a retrospective chart review on 203 consecutive cardio-oncology patients who were seen between January 2019 and March 2020. Mean follow-up for the cohort was 29.2 ± 3.1months (range 0-113). We applied the ASCO guidelines to the breast cancer subgroup.

    The plurality of patients 82/203 (40%) referred to clinic had breast cancer. The most common reason for referral was asymptomatic left ventricular (LV) dysfunction or HF (40%). Only 36/203 (18%) of patients were referred for a pre-chemotherapy evaluation. In breast cancer patients, there was a trend toward significance in up-titrating or initiating beta-blockers in the high vs. low risk ASCO groups [46/69 (67%) vs. 5/13 (38%), p = 0.054]. Approximately 13/82 (16%) of breast cancer patients required alterations to their anti-cancer therapy. HF events occurred in 1/36 (3%) of cancer treatment naïve patients and 14/167 (8%) of those with prior therapy, specifically 9% of the breast cancer subset.

    Our study provides insight into referral practices, interventions, and outcomes at a cardio-oncology clinic. Furthermore, breast cancer patients continue to have high rates of HF. These findings suggest a need to shift referral practices upstream for a pre-chemotherapy evaluation to optimize cardiovascular health.

    Ligation clips are used for vessel or tissue ligation in surgery. Although previous reports have described the migration of metallic clips after hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgery, very few reports have described the migration of non-absorbable polymer clips (NAPCs Hem-o-Lok).

    We present 4 cases of NAPC migration that occurred after laparoscopic surgery. Case 1 was an 81-year-old woman that had undergone a laparoscopic right hemihepatectomy for an intrahepatic bile duct cyst adenocarcinoma at the age of 79years. Two years after the operation, she underwent an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy to investigate epigastric pain. The endoscopy showed NAPCs lodged at the anterior side of the duodenal bulb. Case 2 was an 80-year-old man that had undergone a laparoscopic cholecystectomy for choledocholithiasis at the age of 77years. Three years after the operation, follow-up computed tomography and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) imaging indicated a mass in the upper bile duct. After a laparoscopi, postoperative complications due to NAPC migration are expected to increase in the near future. The differential diagnosis of complications should include potential NAPC migration in patients that have undergone laparoscopic surgery.

As the nodes of this network are distributed through the cortex and interconnected by white matter pathways with different characteristics, modeling the associated conduction delays becomes important. The goal of this study is to estimate and characterize these delays directly from the brain structure. To achieve this, we leveraged microstructural measures from a combination of advanced magnetic resonance imaging acquisitions and computed the main determinants of conduction velocity, namely axonal diameter and myelin content. Using the model proposed by Rushton, we used these measures to calculate the conduction velocity and estimated the associated delays using tractography. We observed that both the axonal diameter and conduction velocity distributions presented a rather constant trend across different connection lengths, with resulting delays that scale linearly with the connection length. Relying on insights from graph theory and Kuramoto simulations, our results support the approximation of constant conduction velocity but also show path- and region-specific differences.We present a brief commentary on the field’s search for an anatomical asymmetry between Broca’s area and its homologue in the non-dominant hemisphere, focusing on a selection of studies, including research from the last decade. We demonstrate that, several years after the influential review of Keller and colleagues from 2009, and despite recent advances in neuroimaging, the existence of a structural asymmetry of Broca’s area is still controversial. This is especially the case for studies of the macroanatomy of this region. We point out the inconsistencies in methodology across studies that could account for the discrepancy in results. Investigations of the microstructure of Broca’s area show a trend of a leftward asymmetry, but it is still unclear how these results relate to language dominance. We suggest that it may be necessary to combine multiple metrics in a systematic manner to find robust asymmetries and to expand the regional scope of structural investigations. Finally, based on the current state of the literature, we should not rule out the possibility that language dominance may simply not be reflected in local anatomical differences in the brain.
