This study aimed to assess the risk of cumulative exposure to Pb, Cd, Hg, and iAs through aquatic products consumed by Chinese people.

Heavy metal concentration data were obtained from the national food contamination monitoring program during 2013-2017. Consumption data were derived from the China National Food Consumption Survey in 2014 and the relative potency factor (RPF) method was used to estimate cumulative exposure for neurotoxicity and nephrotoxicity.

The results demonstrated that the cumulative exposure based on neurotoxicity was below the lower confidence limit on benchmark doses of lead (BMDL

) for nephrotoxicity and the cumulative exposures were all lower than the provisional tolerable monthly intake (PTMI) of Cd. However, the margin of exposure values (MOEs) of the cumulative exposures for neurotoxicity in the 2-6 year-old group was close to 1 and the cumulative exposure level for nephrotoxicity accounted for 90.21 % of the PTMI.

The cumulative exposures of the 2-6 year-old group to the four heavy metals did not reach (but came close to) the corresponding safety threshold for both neurotoxicity and nephrotoxicity. Given that there are still other food sources of these four heavy metals, it is necessary to more closely study their cumulative health effects.

This study aims to explore trends in sedentary behavior among Chinese children aged 6-17 years per demographic and social characteristics.

A total of 4,341 children aged 6-17 years who participated in the

from 2004 to 2015 were included. Repeated measures from mixed-effects models were applied to test trends in sedentary behaviors, which were further analyzed after applying stratification according to gender, age, urbanization level, residential area, and region. Random-effects ordinal regression models were used to examine the trends at sedentary levels.

    From 2004 to 2015, sedentary time among children aged 6-17 years increased from 23.9 ± 0.6 h/week to 25.7 ± 0.6 h/week (

    < 0.001). Increases of 3.1 h/week (

    < 0.001), 2.3 h/week (

    = 0.012), and 1.3 h/week (

= 0.042) were found among the low-, medium-, and high-urbanization groups respectively and increased by 2.0 h/week (

    < 0.001) and 1.3 h/week (

= 0.002) among rural and urban children, respectively. The proportion of Chinese children with average daily screen time below 2 hours declined by 10.2% (

    = 0.51, 95%

    0.42-0.63,

< 0.001); a decreasing trend was observed in both boys and girls.

Sedentary time among Chinese children aged 6-17 years showed an upward trend from 2004 to 2015, especially among children residing in rural areas and regions with low urbanization levels.

Objective This study aimed to investigate the relationship of vitamin D with asthma severity, attacks, and clinical and functional parameters in adult patients with asthma who were living in different geographic regions in Turkey. Methods A total of 384 patients with stable asthma and 87 control subjects were included. A physical examination and a pulmonary function test were performed, and routine blood analyses and vitamin D levels were evaluated. Asthma Control Test was applied. The number of exacerbations in the previous year, asthma therapy, and medication adherence were recorded. Results In our study, vitamin D levels were below the target values in both patients with asthma (median [minimum-maximum] 16.0 ng/mL [3.5-48 ng/ml]) and control subjects (median [minimum-maximum] 20.0 ng/mL [5.8-58.79 ng/mL]). However, it was lower in the patients with asthma than in the control subjects (p = 0n D deficiency in adults with asthma living in different geographic areas in Turkey. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with asthma severity, poor control, and lower lung function. Background Panallergens are proteins that take part in key processes of organisms and, therefore, are ubiquitously distributed with highly conserved sequences and structures. One class of these panallergens is composed of the tropomyosins. The highly heat-stable tropomyosins comprise the major allergens in crustaceans and mollusks, which make them important food allergens in exposed populations. Tropomyosins are responsible for a widespread immunoglobulin E cross-reactivity among allergens from different sources. Allergic tropomyosins are expressed in many species, including parasites and insects. Methods This panallergen class is divided, according to it capacity of induced allergic symptoms, into allergenic or nonallergenic tropomyosin. Although vertebrate tropomyosins share ∼55% of sequence homology with invertebrate tropomyosins, it has been thought that the invertebrate tropomyosins would not have allergic properties. Nevertheless, in recent years, this opinion has been changed. In particular, tropomyosin has been recognized as a major allergen in many insects. Results A high grade of homology has been shown among tropomyosins from different species, such as crustaceans and insects, which supports the hypothesis of cross-reactivity among tropomyosins from divergent species. Moreover, the emerging habit of consuming edible insects has drawn the attention of allergists to invertebrate tropomyosin protein due to its potential allergenic risk. Nevertheless, evidence about tropomyosin involvement in clinical allergic response is still scarce and deserves more investigation. Conclusion This review intended to report allergic reactions associated with different tropomyosins when considering house dust mites, parasites, seafood, and insects, and to summarize our current knowledge about its cross-reactivity because this could help physicians to accurately diagnose patients with food allergy. Background Several factors that increase the risk of severe food-induced anaphylaxis have been identified. Objective We aimed to determine the demographic, etiologic, and clinical features of food-induced anaphylaxis in early childhood and also any other factors associated with severe anaphylaxis. Methods We carried out a medical chart review of anaphylaxis cases from 16 pediatric allergy and immunology centers in Turkey. Results The data of 227 patients with 266 food-induced anaphylaxis episodes were included in the study. The median (interquartile range) age of the first anaphylaxis episode was 9 months (6-18 months); 160 of these patients were boys (70.5%). The anaphylaxis episodes were mild in 75 cases (28.2%), moderate in 154 cases (57.9%), and severe in 37 cases (13.9%). The most frequent food allergens involved were cow’s milk (47.4%), nuts (16.7%), and hen’s egg (15.8%). Epinephrine was administered in only 98 (36.8%) of these anaphylaxis episodes. A logistic regression analysis revealed two statistically significant factors that were independently associated with severe anaphylaxis the presence of angioedema and hoarseness during the anaphylactic episode. Urticaria was observed less frequently in patients who developed hypotension. In addition, confusion and syncope were associated with 25.9- and 44.6-fold increases, respectively, in the risk of concomitant hypotension. Conclusion Cow’s milk, nuts, and hen’s egg caused the majority of mild and moderate-to-severe anaphylaxis episodes. The presence of angioedema and hoarseness in any patient who presents with a history of food-induced anaphylaxis should alert clinicians that the reaction may be severe. In addition, the presence of confusion, syncope, or stridor probably indicates concomitant hypotension. Background The bronchial provocation test (BPT) performed by using the forced oscillation technique (FOT) is cooperated without forced expiratory effort. However, a comparison of the application value and safety of BPTs measured by using the FOT and the standardized dosimeter method is lacking, which limits its clinical practice. Objective We aimed to analyze the diagnostic value and safety of the BPT as measured by the FOT in patients with asthma and in healthy subjects. Methods This was a randomized cross-over clinical study. Airway responsiveness was measured by using the FOT and the aerosol provocation system (APS) dosimeter method in all the participants. The between-test interval was 24 hours. The diagnostic value and safety of the two tests were analyzed. Results Asthma control status was assessed based on ACT scores, and patients with asthma (including 27 uncontrolled, 34 partially controlled, and 32 controlled) were collected, and 69 healthy subjects were recruited. Receiver operating characteristic with the APS-dosimeter method (p less then 0.05). Both tests were well tolerated. No serious adverse event was found. Conclusion The FOT, characterized as being simple, safe, and time saving, could be used to assess airway hyperresponsiveness in patients with asthma and worthy of clinical application. Background Caregiver values and preferences with regard to oral immunotherapy (OIT) for treatment of food allergies are not widely reported. Understanding caregiver perspectives is integral to establishing shared decision-making in the treatment of food allergy. Objective We aimed to understand caregiver opinions that may influence caregivers in their decisions about OIT through social media. Methods We searched a popular parenting web site for posts related to OIT from December 2008 to September 2019. We applied a Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses framework to review posts for inclusion, performed thematic content analysis to determine common themes, and calculated frequencies for each theme and subtheme. Posts and comments were included if they contained discussions about OIT for immunoglobulin E-mediated food allergy and were excluded if they were duplicates, comments from an original post from the original user, or comments on a nonrelevant original post. Results Of 1300 posts and comments retrieved, 174 were included (13%). Most were excluded because they did not directly address OIT for food allergy. Relevant posts could fall into multiple themes and were categorized under three main themes attitudes (n = 128, “I am scared to do OIT but scared not to!”), logistics (n = 168, “We will be doing this once LO [little one] is a little older”), and questions (n = 32, “How does it work?”). Ipatasertib supplier Conclusion Caregivers communicate with each other through social media, expressing attitudes, logistics, and questions about OIT. Understanding these lay perspectives may help guide clinicians in counseling and engage caregivers in decision-making.
